The Győr District Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against a 53-year-old man who lived with his deceased father’s body for more than two years and took the deceased’s pension.

According to the facts in the indictment, the 53-year-old accused lived with his sick father in a family house in Mosonmagyaróvár. The defendant’s mother and brother had already passed away, so there were two people living in the house. The accused was unemployed, had no income, and their only income was his elderly father’s pension.

The father died at the age of 83, presumably in December 2019. When the accused noticed this, he undressed the deceased, laid him in bed, and then covered him, but after that, he did not inform the authorities about the death. After that, the man illegally took his father’s pension every month between January 2020 and February 2022, nearly 5 million HUF (approx EUR 12200) during the two years.

The man was visited by the police in February 2022 – due to another matter – at which time he immediately indicated that his father had died. During the procedure, the investigators found and seized HUF 1.7 million (approx EUR 4150) from the pension taken from the defendant.

The prosecutor’s office filed charges against the defendant for classified budget fraud and proposed a suspended prison sentence, as well as a motion to hand over the seized HUF 1.7 million (approx EUR 4150) to the Hungarian Treasury, in addition to the remaining amount of more than HUF 3.2 million (approx EUR 7810) order confiscation of property by the court.

The substantive decision in the case is expected to be made by the Győr District Court.
